On-The-Job Training (OJT)

Introduction

OJT is a flexible, company-based learning system involving the systematic coaching of staff by supervisors at the workplace through actual work. The training process is essentially one where the supervisor coaches his staff, using the OJT blueprint as a guide. The OJT blueprint is a training document that describes performance standards. It provides a step-by-step guide to performing job tasks, the standards required for each task, the underpinning knowledge required and training guidelines for trainers. Learning is structured and conducted through a step-by-step demonstration, guided instruction, skills practice, independent learning and follow-up.

Benefits of Implementation

The organisation will be able to:

  • conduct more structured and effective trainings
  • speed up the learning process
  • widen the skills base of their workforce and take them to a multi-skills level
  • have a more cost-effective training that works
